Playground Equipment at Lakeside Park, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin


See more Playground Designs: www.bciburke.com When a seven-member team participating in a leadership program of the Fond du Lac (Wisconsin) Area Association of Commerce first identified the need for a special barrier-free playground in the area, they had no idea how enthusiastic the community would support the project. While there were many playgrounds in the area, the group was surprised to find that no public park in the entire county had a barrier-free playground that could be used by children with both physical and cognitive disabilities. Further investigation revealed that many local organizations had dreamed of building a truly accessible playground, however, the dream remained beyond reach until the leadership team rallied the community. The vision began to take shape when discussions with city officials resulted in the donation of a plot of land in the expansive and picturesque Lakeside Park, located in the city on the shores of Lake Winnebago. BCI Burke was contacted immediately as they had designed and installed a multitude of other playgrounds in the 400-acre park and without delay a plan came together that produced a barrier-free playground that assured access for all children regardless of ability, and encouraged peer-to-peer relationships between disabled and non-disabled children.
